Cold Weather Can Trigger Acne! Here’s Why & Tips To Keep It Under Control.

Did you ever notice acne appearing as the weather shifts? As sweater weather approaches and nature starts to slow down, our sebum-producing glands may speed up! Here’s why:

The cold, dry air can trigger increased sebum production to compensate for the lack of moisture in your skin. As oil builds up in your pores and starts to get clogged, pimples will cozy up to the surface. On top of that, the cold air may be harsh on your skin barrier and cause inflammation, a huge no-no for the acne-prone community. This is especially for any of us who have chronic inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, eczema or rosacea. The shock of cold air stresses the body, which in turn, provokes flare ups.

As cold weather months are typically paired with major holiday events, we want to make sure you can look and feel your best. Here are some tips that will tell your acne to chill out in these chilly months. 

Use a gentle cleanser & avoid harsh exfoliators. This will help wash away any debris and excess sebum without stripping too much of your natural sebum away. Your natural sebum will help keep your skin barrier moisturized.

  • Avoid hot showers & baths. Hot water will dry your skin out like crazy! We want to keep as much moisture in our skin as we can.

  • Don’t forget your sunscreen throughout the day. If you already have active pimples, the sun will darken your acne or scars. Also, just simply avoiding sun damage is always a plus.
